Your being like that
is why everything always ends up
like this.

-Urusei Yatsura
    Recently I bought new towels
for the kitchen and first floor bathroom.
The latter are a rich gold color, made partly
of modal fiber from European beechwood trees.

Now every time I walk into that bathroom,
I feel compelled to touch them and savor
their texture. Sometimes I even take one
off the rack just to rub it against my face.

I appreciate all the good things I have.
I appreciate who and what makes me happy.
Umbrella, light, landscape, sky --
There is no language of the holy.
The sacred lies in the ordinary.

Indeed, it is the simple pleasures in life that people often ignore, without a second thought. I often wonder if, with all the technology and so-called advances of civilization, are our lives truly better? I mean spiritually, as individuals... it seems like that although some groups (e.g., women, non-whites in the U.S.) may have more freedom to do as they please, but as a whole we as a people exercise more of that freedom on the material.

I cannot express how much pleasure I get simply out of watching the birds at feeder out my kitchen window. Just watching them interact, with the occasional stir caused by a Blue Jay or similar fellow who wants the feeder to themselves. I guess I need to continue to look for similar sources of simple pleasure.

Maudlin? Perhaps... probably the result of little sleep and few accomplishments, making me cranky.
